Agatha Christie (September 15, 1890 – January 12, 1976), born Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller at Ashfield in Torquay, Devon, was a British detective novelist and playwright.

Although she received little formal education, Christie was an avid reader with a particular passion for the stories of Sherlock Holmes. She served as a volunteer during World War I. In 1920, she published her first detective novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles. In 1926, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd cemented her unshakable status in the realm of detective fiction. She subsequently published works such as Murder on the Orient Express, The A.B.C. Murders, Death on the Nile, And Then There Were None, and Evil Under the Sun. The stage play adapted from her novel, The Mousetrap, has become the longest-running play in the world.

Agatha Christie’s career spanned over fifty years, during which she wrote more than eighty detective novels. Her works have been bestsellers in over a hundred countries and regions worldwide, with total sales exceeding two billion copies. The mustachioed detective Hercule Poirot and the sleuth Miss Marple—characters she created—are beloved by readers. In 1971, Queen Elizabeth II awarded her a damehood in recognition of her contributions. Agatha Christie passed away on January 12, 1976, at her home in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, and was laid to rest in the churchyard of St. Mary’s Church in Oxfordshire.
